3. DO I NEED A REFERRAL TO HAVE MY EYES TESTED?No referral is required to see an optometrist.

4. HOW MUCH DOES AN EYE TEST COST?

Andrew Knights Optometrists bulk bill eye tests for eligible patients to Medicare so it does not cost you anything?

5. HOW OFTEN CAN I GET MY EYES TESTED?

Medicare allows for a full comprehensive examination every two years. However, you can have your eyes tested more often if problems arise. Also there are some conditions, such as diabetes, that require an eye test more often.

6. HOW OLD DO CHILDREN HAVE TO BE TO HAVE THEIR EYES TESTED?

We normally recommend that children have their eyes tested at three years old and then again at five years old to rule out any eye problems before they start school. After that we normally recommend every two years. If you are concerned that your child may have a problem earlier than this, we are quite happy to see children as young as 6 months.

7. HOW DOES THE GST AFFECT GLASSES?

GST has caused a slight increase in the price of frames as they incur the GST. Lenses and contact lenses are GST free. Other accessories such as cords and contact lens solutions also incur the GST

ABOUT YOUR EYES

1. WHAT ARE CATARACTS?

Cataracts are a normal part of the ageing process. The lens inside the eye is quite clear in young people. As you age, the lens becomes cloudy and starts to obstruct your vision. People often complain of looking through a dirty window or that their glasses always seem dirty even when they are clear. If the cataracts get bad enough they can be removed by surgery and a new clear lens inserted.

2. WHAT IS GLAUCOMA?

Glaucoma is an eye disease that tends to run in families. The most common form is a chronic increase in eye pressure that reduces your side vision. Early detection is the key to effective treatment. There are no obvious symptoms to glaucoma so we advise all patients over 40 years old to have a regular eye test including a glaucoma test every two years.

3. WHY DO I HAVE TO GET MY EYES CHECKED IF I HAVE DIABETES?

Diabetes is a disease that can affect the small blood vessels at the back of the eye. It can cause the vessels to bleed and fluid to leak out. This can lead to permanent and irreversible loss of vision. If you have diabetes, you need to have regular eye checks to determine if these changes are happening in your eyes.

You should expect that we would use drops to dilate your pupils so that the retina and blood vessels can be inspected in detail. If there is a problem, your optometrist can refer you to an eye specialist for further assessment.

4. WILL WEARING GLASSES MAKE MY EYES WORSE?

No. It is a common myth that wearing glasses will make your eyes worse. This is not the case. Glasses are designed to support the eyes while allowing them to continue to focus to the best of their ability. In some cases, glasses can actually make your eyes better.

Anecdotally, I recently re-examined the vision of identical twins. One wears her spectacles full time for distance and near and the other tries to never wear her spectacles. The twin who was not wearing her spectacles full time had become much more short-sighted than her twin. Her best correction was now #6.00 each eye while her compliant twin was #3.50. I know which I would have preferred to be. This is hardly a scientific analysis and I am sure the exponents of the #don#t wear your glasses# camp will want to give me a dozen reasons why this poor non wearer of spectacles had her best correction march onward to #6.00. Would she be less short sighted if she had worn her spectacles more often? I#m not sure how you determine that one.

5. I HAVE A SPOT LIKE A SPIDERWEB OR SPEC IN MY VISION. WHAT DO I DO?

Spots or spider webs in your vision can be caused by a number of things. In most cases theses spots are quite harmless but some can be the warning signs of a serious problem. It is best to get it checked by your optometrist at your earliest possible convenience.

6. I AM SEEING FLASHES OF LIGHT IN THE VISION OF ONE EYE. WHAT SHOULD I DO?

Flashes of light in your vision may be an indication of a problem at the back of the eye. It needs to be checked as soon as possible by your eye-care practitioner. I would regard any sudden change in the functioning of the eyes, (of one eye in particular) as suspicious until proven otherwise. See your optometrist or ophthalmologist as soon as possible.
